This weekend’s trip saw more preparatory work. We prepared another potato row, having decided that the chitting progress didn’t quite justify planting yet. We also prepared and covered the courgette/squash patch with weed suppressant membrane so that it is now ready for planting. We also rough dug the two sweet corn patches. Continue reading

Continuing preparations
We spent a reasonable amount of time on a sunny morning at the allotment. We rough dug the area that will be cucurbits (squashes, courgettes and gherkins) and finely prepared the first two rows for potatoes (once the chits are big enough for planting out). Continue reading
Getting started…
The strange thing about the allotment is that we didn’t really imagine that we would get one. Back in January when the idea of Red Kite was first being mooted we did some research to find out just how tough it is to get an allotment locally so that we could use this in marketing material about growing your own at home. Maidenhead has a 5-7 year waiting list, but the Cookham situation was not available on line, so I sent a query to Cookham Parish Council to see what the situation was. Continue reading
